Quarternity: Mandalas and Waiting for Godot

Concept Garden

Our garden plays off of the notion of paradise, where elements are derived through analytical research of mandalas, quadripartite gardens, and Waiting for Godot, a French play. My role included design research, as well as 3D modeling and rendering.

These are some elements in our garden:
  • Paradise originates from the Persian word paradeisoi, meaning a walled garden. Our garden is surrounded by vine covered structures to symbolize that wall.
  • Also, paradise gardens were quadripartite (divided into four) separated by the four rivers. Our interpreation does just that with the rivers being different paving material. The idea continues in the materials of the retaining walls.
  • We studied the Axis Mundi, the center and the symbol that exists over time through many cultures. It is interpreted as our sculptured tree, where the roots erupt and to push the earth with it.

section

This section illustrates the different levels gained from the eruption of the earth where the retaining walls consisting of four different materials reinforce the idea of a quadripartite garden. The section also shows the diverse plants found on the site, which were studied by our team leader to be able to withstand the climate and soil type in that area.
