Pilipino Culture Night

Postcards / Flyers

Inspired by Obey propaganda, the designs for the 23rd annual Pilipino Culture Night conveys a sense of activism and Big Brotherism. The production is a soap opera within a play that takes place during the People Power Movement at the crossroads of Ninoy Aquino's assassination and Cory Aquino's rise to power (noted by the yellow theme and ribbon). To bring everything together, the Eye of Providence signifies a crucial point in the play where the protagonist is offered a job to write a movie that portrays a corrupted presidential candidate in a positive light.

programs

More subtle hints can be found in the 5.5" x 8.5" 44 page program, namely on the cover.
  • The show's title, "Mga Kababayan Ko," spans across the front and back cover, yet only "Bayan Ko" can be read on the front. "Bayan Ko" translates to "My Country," and is the last song sung in the show. The song reflects the beauty and love for the Philippines, which the antagonist realizes at the very end thereby pulling the whole show and program together.

T-shirts

T-shirts given to the cast members and sold to the audience also carried the design. Because it only used two ink colors (black and cream), the design turned out to be cost-effective, as well.

Pattern

This pattern contains many subtle details about the play:
  • The triangles filled with hearts allude to the love triangle that takes place.
  • A split heart represents a broken heart as one or more people are hurt in the end
  • The peso (Philippines currency) sign laying on top of the Philippines sun illustrates the struggle to choose between fame and community
  • The stars represent stardom for the main character, yet are the lines running to or away from them?

Posters

Had there been enough money in the budget, the PCN design would've translated nicely to poster size.
